A Heart That God Wants

A-Heart-That-God-Wants-jpg

Scripture: Proverbs 4:23

KJV: “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

GNT: “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.”

RSV: “Keep your heart with all vigilance; for from it flow the springs of life.”

 Reflection.

I really like how bibleref.com puts it: “To “keep” something, in this sense, means more than simply “to maintain ownership.” It speaks of support, upkeep, and maintenance. Some translations use the word “guard,” saying, “A wise person realizes that temptation is real (1 Corinthians 10:13) and takes the appropriate precaution.” This is consistent with earlier remarks in Proverbs 4:14–15, where Solomon counsels his son to actively avoid evil and those who practice it.

Furthermore, Scripture emphasizes repeatedly that the source of good or evil is the heart. According to Jeremiah 17:9, “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick.” According to Jesus’ proclamation in Luke 6:45, “The good person comes from his good treasure of his heart, and the evil person comes from his evil treasure, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”

Considering the foregoing, the Oxford Dictionary provides the following definition of the heart: “a hollow muscular organ that pumps blood through the circulatory system by rhythmic contraction and dilation.” There may be up to four chambers in vertebrates, including two atria and two ventricles (as in humans). The Bible also refers to the heart as the source of life or power. Therefore, it refers to one’s mind, soul, spirit, or entire emotional make-up and comprehension.

The Bible uses the word “heart” to describe the controlling centre of the entire person, the source of all desires. The nucleus is regarded as the location of the will, intellect, and emotions. The Bible states that the heart is the foundation of all aspects of human life, not just spiritual ones.

What is the moral lesson of Proverbs 4 23?

The problems of life are those things that come from our hearts and ultimately determine our lives, according to Proverbs 4:23. If our hearts are filled with evil, then our issues and decisions in life will also be filled with evil. Naturally, an evil life will result.

Your success in life therefore depends on the thought from your heart, so guide, guard, or maintain it with extreme diligence.

 Prayer.

O LORD, TEACH US TO PRACTICALLY GUIDE OUR HEARTS AS YOU DESIRE IN JESUS NAME, AMEN.
