A Period Spent with God

A Period Spent with God

Scripture: Luke 5:12-16

St. Luke 5:16

KJV: And he withdrew himself into the wilderness and prayed.

GNT: But he would go away to lonely places, where he prayed.

NLT: But Jesus often withdrew to the wilderness for prayer.

Reflection:

These verses describe Jesus’ healing of a leprous man. This would have been a severe skin condition, though perhaps not the same as the “leprosy” that is now referred to as “Hansen’s disease.” After inviting His first followers, Jesus begins the first of two attention-grabbing healings.

Throughout the Gospel, Jesus is depicted teaching throngs on hillsides and in cities as well as healing the sick and diseased who are brought to Him. Everything fit in with the Son of Man’s purpose, which was to “search and save the lost.” (Luke 19:10). On the other hand, it is also mentioned that He “often retired to lonely areas.” (5:16). In order to resume His mission, He used his time there to reconnect with the Father, renew, and restore himself.

It is helpful to keep in mind that, despite his consistent efforts to serve, Jesus frequently withdrew. If Jesus found this practice to be so important, how much more so for us? May we regularly spend time with our father so that he can fully replenish us. In other words, if you want to see God’s mighty hand at work in your life, you need to spend more time alone with him. I was curious about how Buddhists and followers of other faiths gain power through meditation. Do you not believe that father-son meditation could give you the abilities you need to carry out ministry, develop into a devoted Christian, and other things? How do you feel?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

1- So, when you think of a “lonely environment,” what comes to mind?

2- When and where can you spend time alone with the father?

Prayer:

FATHER, THANK YOU FOR REMINISCENTING US OF THE IMPORTANCE OF TIME SPENT WITH YOU. WE REQUIRE YOUR GRACE AND STRENGTH TO RENEW OUR OFTEN-TIRED SOUL, AMEN.
