Passionately Love Others

Scripture: 1 John 2:9

KJV: He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.

GNT: If we say that we are in the light, yet hate others, we are in the darkness to this very hour.

NIV: Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.

NLT: If anyone says, “I am living in the light,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is still living in darkness.

ESV: Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.

 Reflection.

Let’s take a look at the example in verse 9: This man claims to be in the light, where God is, but he hates his brother (in Christ). The truth, according to John, is that he is still in the shadows. John offers the example of a second man—one who cares for his brother (in Christ). He is in the light, this man. So, this is a story about two men.

John also makes clear the new commandment that was alluded to in the preceding verses. He makes a clear, concise, and understandable claim: Those who claim to be followers of Christ but show hostility toward other Christians are really walking in darkness. A person who despises other Christians cannot genuinely claim to have fellowship with Christ. Strong, precise language is used to state this. These words or statements might be straightforward, but it can be challenging for believers to follow them.

After reading the aforementioned verse, I am persuaded that telling someone whether they are in LIGHT or DARKNESS is not necessarily a judgmental statement. Friends, if you’d like to find out where you stand right now and possibly devise ways to improve your love lives for others, either to return to light if you’re already in darkness or to get better if you’re in the light, please read all the various translations.

Finally, whoever loves his brother lives in the light and possesses nothing that could cause him to fall. However, a person who hates their brother is in the dark and moves through it blindly; they have no idea where they are going.
