Take Off Your Filthy Garments

Take Off Your Filthy Garments

Scripture: Zechariah 3:1-7

FOCUS: Zechariah 3:3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and stood before the angel.

Reflection.

This book, which is a section of the Book of the Twelve Minor Prophets, contains the prophecies attributed to the prophet Zechariah. The high priest Joshua is purified before God in the chapter’s vision. Satan, the accuser of the brethren and their avowed enemy, witnesses the sin of God’s people, accuses them before the Lord, and seeks their condemnation.

Now, regrettably, Joshua the High Priest was also impacted by the fact that he was a sinner. Remember that Joshua was a High Priest, not just a Christian, who stood before God and believed in his heart that his ways were right, but the accuser of the brethren (the devil) found his garment to be filthy.

I wanted to know if we could discuss this filthy garment in more detail. I want us to focus on two specific garments from the book of Galatians 5:19–22 for the teaching of today.

1- The works of the flesh

Please read Galatians 5:19 for a list of the works of the flesh. When we discuss filthy clothing, we don’t necessarily mean that the clothing is physically dirty. In fact, you might appear to be very clean on the outside, dressed in white, but inside you’re full of fornication, malice, and hatred. Just so you know, whenever you enter God’s presence in worship, the devil is aware of your innermost thoughts.  Although the devil accuses you of continuing to wear dirty clothing, God wants to bless you well. Why not take off those soiled clothes and start taking full advantage of God’s blessings?

2- The Fruits of the Spirit

The fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, and Peace, according to Galatians 5:22. Wow! What a fruit to have and what clothing to wear. You could say that Love is the first fruit of the Spirit. According to the Bible, God is Love, so if you have Love (true Love), you already have God. Other Fruits will consequently start to manifest on their own. Therefore, without love, you cannot have peace, joy.

My dear friends I have every confidence that if you exhibit the fruits of the Spirit, the devil—the accuser of brethren—cannot bring any charges against you before God. As a result, I urge everyone to make every effort to open themselves up to the Holy Spirit’s indwelling so that they can start to exhibit the fruits of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22.

Remember, it doesn’t matter how long you’ve known Jesus or how dedicated you are to the church. I think Joshua possesses all those qualities, yet the accuser accused him. When you enter God’s presence, make sure your clothing is clean.

 PRAYER

Dear Lord! We aren’t sure if our garments are clean or filthy. But our prayers today are to be filled with your Spirit and begin to manifest all the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Lord: if we must put on any garments in your presence, let it be the fruits of the Spirit, Amen.
