THE MYSTERIOUS WILL OF GOD

THE MYSTERIOUS WILL OF GOD

Scripture: Ephesians 1:9

Having made known unto us THE MYSTERY OF HIS WILL, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself:

Reflection.

The perfect will of God is mysterious, to say the least. Following the will of God can make you look odd and weird. But you will not shy away from the perfect will of God if you understand that the will of God is essentially mysterious in its nature.

A mysterious thing has strange and often inexplicable features. It is not easily understood, and it is often misunderstood. People misunderstand God and often think that He is trying to pull them down or destroy them when He presents His will for their lives.

They cannot fathom this wonderful and mysterious will of the Lord. In this chapter, I want us to look at the many different occasions when the will of God has been mysterious to man. When you understand that the will of God is mysterious, you will not be afraid of it or reject it.

1. THE MYSTERY THAT FORSAKING EARTHLY SECURITY ON GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS CAN GIVE YOU SECURITY. Genesis 11:4

There are certain things we do to secure our future. Certainly, forsaking your country and your family and launching out into the desert is not one of the ways to secure a great future.

Mysteriously, that was the way Abraham was going to become internationally famous. The mystery of the will of God can be shown in how God gave Abraham a great name on earth with a lasting heritage in Heaven when he walked out into the insecurity and uncertainty of the will of God.

Amazingly, in the story of the Tower of Babel, those who tried to make a great name for themselves amounted to absolutely nothing. Their aims were clearly spelt out. “Let’s make a name for ourselves and let’s get to Heaven.”

It is Abraham who mysteriously acquired a great name for himself and got himself into Heaven. How did he do this? “… but the one who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:17, NASB). By simply forsaking the security he had from his country and his family, Abraham embraced the security of walking with God.

2. THE MYSTERY, THAT DOING NOTHING, ON GOD’S INSTRUCTIONS, CAN GIVE GREATER RESULTS THAN DOING SOMETHING. 1 Chronicles 17:3-4

Mysteriously, the perfect will of God can mean that you should stay put and do nothing. It is difficult to do nothing when you are full of life and energy. The mysterious will of God is shown by David’s obedience to not build the temple.

By obeying God and doing nothing to build a temple, he allowed his son to build the world-famous Solomon’s Temple. Up until today, the building that David did not build forms part of the news and is a major focus of world history. Is it not amazing how great things you can accomplish by doing nothing when God says, “do nothing”?

3. THE MYSTERY THAT LIMITING YOUR MINISTRY TO ONE GROUP OF PEOPLE CAN CAUSE YOU TO REACH ALL GROUPS OF PEOPLE. Matthew 15:21-24

The mysterious will of God is shown by how Jesus reached the whole world by ministering to Jews only. Today Christianity is a non-Jewish religion.

4. THE MYSTERY THAT IF IT IS THE WILL OF GOD, YOU MAY BE MORE FRUITFUL DEAD THAN ALIVE. Luke 9:30-31

The mysterious will of God is shown in Jesus’ not travelling all over the world to preach. Rather, by His not continuing to preach but accomplishing His death on the cross, Jesus Christ spread His mission to the whole world.

5. THE MYSTERY THAT LOSING CAN LEAD TO GAINING. Matthew 16:25

Anyone who wants to gain something does everything he can to prevent himself from losing. Yet, here comes Jesus declaring that losing your life is the way to gaining it. How much more mysterious can the will of God be?

6. THE MYSTERY THAT BEING LAST CAN LEAD TO BECOMING FIRST. Matthew 19:30

Is it not mysterious that when you are last you can be first? In every race I know about, it is important to be in the first group or near the front if you are to stand any chance of coming first. Can you imagine your coach telling you, “Be last in this race so you win the medal.”

It is not easy to come from behind and pass the people who are far ahead of you. Yet, our Lord says that being last can lead to being first. This is indeed a mystery. How many believe that they will receive the first position by being the last? It is time to stop fighting the mysterious will of God. It is time to embrace it! THE MYSTERY THAT NOT SEEKING WEALTH CAN MAKE YOU ACQUIRE WEALTH.

7. THE MYSTERY THAT DOING THE WILL OF GOD MAKES YOU CLOSE TO GOD. Mark 3:35

Anyone who does the will of God becomes close to the Lord. I once spoke to a brother who was worried that he would not see me because I was sending him to a faraway country.

Prayer.

Thank you, Jesus for the gift of knowledge and revelations through these teachings.
