The Result of Consistency in Your Christian Faith

Scripture; Matthew 15:21-28-KJV

St. Matthew 15:21 Then Jesus went thence and departed into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon.

St. Matthew 15:22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.

St. Matthew 15:23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

St. Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

St. Matthew 15:25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me.

St. Matthew 15:26 But he answered and said, it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and to cast it to dogs.

St. Matthew 15:27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.

St. Matthew 15:28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

 REFLECTION:

Wow! What an inspiring story we have today. It illustrates how the scope of God’s plan for salvation is unbounded. The Gospel is not only for Jews, but also for Gentiles. Both Jews and Gentiles can receive God’s gift of salvation through repentance of sins and faith in the atoning work of His son, Jesus Christ.

Dear Friends, the story above demonstrates how steadfast and fervent this woman was in her faith. I pondered why she continued to follow Jesus despite His comparison of her to a dog. Different cultures and individuals have different ideas about how to treat dogs. For instance, dogs may be viewed as pets, children, babies, or other things in North America, where I currently live, as well as in other parts of the world. Some people even go so far as to promise their dogs their inheritance.

However, dogs do not live inside their owners’ homes in Africa, specifically Nigeria, where I was born. Usually, the dog houses are constructed outside the main house. A typical African man would typically keep a dog as a security measure to keep intruders from entering and exiting the property rather than as a pet. I was wondering if Jesus would have treated a dog differently in Canada or Nigeria based on how dogs are treated in those two countries, as previously explained. However, there is no need to worry about that.

My main worry, however, is that the woman in the story would have been frustrated by Jesus’ words, just as some of us might have left or vowed never to return to our local churches due to the pastor’s or a member’s frustrated remarks. I think this word applies to someone already, namely you who are reading this text. If not you, then perhaps the following person, i suppose.

However, I will leave you with this to reflect for the day.

IF YOU WERE IN THE SHOES OF THAT WOMAN WITH SUCH FRUSTRATED WORDS FROM JESUS, WOULD YOU RATHER FORGET ABOUT JESUS AND SEEK SOLUTION ELSEWHERE OR STICK TO HIM AS A RESULT OF CONSISTENCY IN YOUR CHRISTIAN FAITH? Remember that our faith in God will surely be tested at some point.

 Prayer.

O LORD: HELP US TO ALWAYS BE CONSISTENT IN OUR FAITH EVEN WHEN WE DONT GET IMMEDIATE ANSWERS FROM YOU IN JESUS NAME, AMEN.
