What Do You Do for a Living? – What Is Your Work?

What Do You Do for a Living? – What Is Your Work?

 Scripture: St. John 9:4

KJV – “I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.”

 Reflection.

Everyone is probably familiar with the subject, and the key word that stands out in our minds is “work.” Everyone thinks they must work and be rewarded every two or four weeks. Everybody works—at home, at school, at the church, at the market, etc. Working is important because, according to the Bible, those who don’t work shouldn’t eat, and a labourer has a right to his wages, according to Jesus.

Today, I’d like to explain the distinction between a job and a work so that we can determine whether we are working or performing our jobs in order to receive heavenly or earthly rewards. Let’s see what the dictionaries have to say about these two terms.

To begin, I would explain the distinction between “work & job.” The Oxford dictionary provides the following succinct definition:

Job- a paid position of regular employment or a task or piece of work, especially one that is paid.

Work- activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.

Here are my personal observations based on those definitions. No one has a job by birth; instead, jobs are acquired through training, skill development, and payment for performing daily tasks outlined in job descriptions. Everyone was born with the ability to work. Additionally, I’ll define work as the inner gift that is your life’s purpose. Jesus Christ made it very clear that He had to carry out the will of the one who sent Him. Do not mix up the terms job and work. We spend at least 40 hours a week at our jobs, if not more, and neglect to focus on our work’s original purpose. I pray that everyone finds their calling and pursues it while the day is still light.

Good friends, there are many things to discuss regarding this passage of scripture, but in my opinion, it raises a question that requires personal and unique responses.  It means that “DAY” (meaning, complete your work now that you have the chance to; preach God’s word, win souls to the kingdom, or do anything else to please God now). I stand to be corrected on this. “NIGHT” refers to a future time when it will be impossible to preach or win souls, such as during the Covid-19 lockdown, death, or the judgment, for example.

Another observation about day and night is provided by today’s verse: We must carry out the works of the one who sent Jesus while it is still daylight because once night falls, no one will be able to work. This message from our Lord serves as a reminder of the pressing need to respond to God’s timing.

Therefore, “I must perform the tasks assigned to me by the One who sent me while it is daylight; WHAT IS YOUR WORK?

We humbly offer up our wills to be guided by your Spirit and pledge to live our lives in your honour, Father. Please direct us.

 Prayer.

FATHER: PLEASE, HELP US TO ENGAGE IN OUR DAILY WORKS THAT YOU HAVE SENT US TO DO WHILE IT IS DAY IN JESUS NAME, AMEN.
