The Wisdom of Serpents

The Wisdom of Serpents

Scripture: Matthew 10:16

“……. be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.”

Hello to all! I recently finished reading Bishop Dag Heward-Mills’ book, “What it means to be as wise as a serpent.” As I read through those pages, it occurred to me that it would be energizing to share both the author’s and my thoughts on a possible teaching series for this week and the following. But I’ll urge you to buy the book, so you have it in your library for future use.

It makes sense that men are afraid of snakes. If people treat snakes with the respect they deserve, it is also not strange. It is a known fact that despite the widespread animosity that exists toward them, snakes are amazing creatures that survive and proliferate admirably.

We might have missed the superior wisdom that serpents practice if Jesus had not mentioned it. Jesus emphasized the serpent’s wisdom, so we should all pay close attention to them and take whatever lessons we can from them. So, what does a serpent’s wisdom consist of? How does a serpent become wise?

Would you not want to discover the knowledge that would enable you to excel above all of your coworkers?

Would you not want to discover the knowledge that could help you prevail over fierce opposition and hatred?

Would you not want to possess the knowledge that would cause people to respect and fear you? Do you not desire the knowledge that will enable you to quietly achieve all of your life’s objectives?

You certainly desire such knowledge. Yes, that is the serpent’s wisdom. Jesus said that’s why we need to have serpent-like wisdom.

Let’s look at seven of the reasons why snakes are regarded as wise.

Seven Reasons Why Serpents Are Considered Wise

1- Serpents are considered to be wise because they have multiplied and flourished more than any other wild animals.

2- Serpents are considered to be wise because they have continued to exist in an ever-modernizing world. You will notice that many wild animals are becoming extinct in our modern world.

3- Serpents are considered to be wise because they have been able to flourish even though they are hated by everyone.

4- Serpents are considered to be wise because they evoke fear and respect in human beings. Human beings do not fear and respect many animals, but they fear and respect snakes.

5- Serpents are considered to be wise because of their ability to live in every continent and every part of the world.

6- Serpents are considered to be wise because of their ability to function in every sphere; on land, in sea, in fresh water and even in air.

7- Serpents are considered to be wise because of their ability to accomplish their goals in this world. Despite all the odds stacked against the snakes, they can live, eat and multiply.

We shall continue with this exciting teaching tomorrow.

Dear Lord! May we live by your instructions as we desire to become as wise as the serpent, Amen.
