Why Sheep (Believers) need to Go Through Valleys?

Why Sheep (Believers) need to Go Through Valleys?

Scripture: Psalms 23:4

“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.”

 REFLECTION

It’s interesting to observe that shepherds take their sheep through valleys in addition to high terrain. A lot of people believe that if God is with us, He will only lead us on high ground. A valley, however, speaks of our lives’ darkest moments and seasons.

The verse for today teaches us that the shepherd does not abandon the sheep in the valleys, but rather guides them back to the high ground by leading them through the gloomy and terrifying valleys. And I was pondering how accurately this described our own lives. How many times have we experienced deep, desolate valleys where our only source of support was the voice of the shepherd (God), speaking through our pastors or other leaders? How many times have churchgoers or believers relied on their pastors or leaders to uphold them as God’s representatives?

Today, I want to encourage you, and Bishop Dag Heward-Mills once said, “Every mountain has valleys. Deep gulches, draws, and ravines terrify its sides. And along these valleys is always the best path to the top.

Any shepherd who is accustomed to the high country is aware of this. He guides His flock up the paths that wind through the deep valleys in a gentle but persistent manner. Notably, the verse begins, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death.” Instead of saying “I die there” or “I stop there,” it simply says “I walk through.”

Therefore, if people today would let the Holy Spirit guide them through those valleys (some difficult times in life), they would undoubtedly be guided all the way to the summit of their lives’ mountains.

 Prayer.

DEAR LORD, MY HONEST PRAYER FOR US TODAY IS FOR THE GRACE TO OBEY AND FOLLOW YOU THROUGH THE PATH AND VALLEYS. AND EVEN THOUGH WE WALK THROUGH THOSE VALLEYS, WE SHALL NOT BE AFRAID; FOR THOU ART WITH US; THY ROD AND THY STAFF SHALL COMFORT US THROUGH TO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAINS OF OUR LIVES IN JESUS NAME, AMEN.
